The Association assists member councils to address their transport, infrastructure, community and environmental services needs throughout the Northern Territory by administering contracts on their behalf, supporting and promoting road safety initiatives, providing engineering, community, environmental and project management services.

The Association was successful in obtaining funds for a Waste Oil Project and a Natural Resource Management Initiative, both from the Australian Government Department of Environment and Heritage.

The Commonwealth Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination provided funds to the Association fo governance and infrastructure for the ‘Communities in Crisis’ project to assist nominated councils in providing facilities such as sports ovals and safe houses for persons at risk.

Local Roads in the Northern Territory

At present local councils in the NT manage 14,131 km of local roads. However, with the Local Government reforms and the amalgamations and total incorporation of the Northern Territory under Local Government, this will mean an additional 8,600 km of local roads will be transferred by the Northern territory government to local councils. So the total local roads managed by local councils will increase to 22,731 km.

The provision of adequate road infrastructure is critical to the economic and social wellbeing of communities, particularly in remote areas.

Road provide:

  • Access to communities;
  • Links to other communities;
  • Movement of freight, especially essential goods and services;
  • Access to government services; and
  • The conduit for employment and business development in communities.

The Northern Territory’s very different circumstances give rise to higher costs of providing virtually all government services, including roads.
