Transport & Infrastructure
LGANT assists members by representation and lobbying, both at a Territory level as well as a national level for increased funding for transport infrastructure. Some of the inquiries and forums that the Association has been involved in are:
- Submissions to the Vaile / Neville Inquiry into Federal Road Funding 1997.
Northern Territory Public Accounts Inquiry into the Roles of Various Funding Bodies in the Development and maintenance of roads, Airstrips and barge landings on Aboriginal Communities and Outstations in the Northern Territory 1999.
- House of representatives Standing Committee on Primary Industries and regional services - Inquiry into Infrastructure and the Development of Australia's Regional Areas. 1999.
- Participation in the Northern Australian Regional Economic Forum.
- Emergency Management Australia: Workshop into the "Impact of the Rural decline on Emergency Management".
- Auslink greenpaper "Towards the National Land Transport Plan" 2002.
Also LGANT disseminates information on, and where possible assists with technical support about, issues relating to transport and Infrastructure.
- LGANT participates in a number of committees relating to Transport and Infrastructure for example:
- Northern Territory Consultative Committee for the Federal Government Road Safety Black Spot Initiative.
- The recently formed Northern Territory National Road Rules Maintenance Group.
- The Northern Territory Road Safety Council.
Also this service is responsible for the management and maintenance of 1,200km of local government roads in remote regions of the Northern Territory in which no Council wants responsibility for .
Association Policies
a) LGANT supports increased funding being provided for transport and infrastructure projects in the NT.
b) LGANT calls on Commonwealth and Territory Governments to recognise that the key to efficiency in transport and infrastructure provision is the integration of planning and program management at community and regional levels.
c) LGANT seeks a priority ongoing commitment by the Commowealth Government to capital works programs for the provision of essential infrastructure in regional Australia.
d) LGANT supports the Commonwealth Government subsidising appropriate public transport in remote areas, recognising especially the transport disadvantages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
