The President of the Local Government Association, Alderman Kerry Moir today welcomed the election of the new members to the LGANT Executive. Alderman Moir, from Darwin City Council who has recently taken over the LGANT Presidency from Alice Springs Mayor, Fran Kilgariff said, “the new appointments maintain a good regional balance on the Executive”.
Tennant Creek Mayor Rod Swanson has been elected to the Vice President (Municipal) position and brings to the Executive a wealth of experience in business and private enterprise. Mayor Swanson said that he “believes Local Government needs to present a strong and united voice to both Territory and Federal Government to gain the recognition it truly deserves as the third arm of Government”.
Alderman Jane Muré, from the Alice Springs Town Council is a municipal representative on the Executive and maintains the Alice Springs representation. Jane has been on the Alice Springs Town Council for one year and is particularly interested in assisting local industry groups to think outside the square”.
Tony Scrutton, Chairman of the Anmatjere Community Government Council recently resigned his position as Liaison Officer with the council to successfully contest the Anmatjere Council election. As a community government representative on the LGANT Executive Tony says he will “bring a lot of knowledge to the Executive about Aboriginal ways of working, Aboriginal Governance”.
Alderman Moir said, “There are a number of important issues facing local government in the coming months, including regionalisation and the Commonwealth’s Fair Share report and I am confident that this Executive has the balance, skills and enthusiasm to play a leading role in facing these issues”.
