Indexation of Grants welcome.

The Local Government Association of the Northern Territory welcomed the announcement today by Local Government Minister John Ah Kit that the operational grant paid to the 56 Community Government and Association Councils will now be indexed.

“This was asked for in our recently released election paper, ‘Resourcing Local Government for the future’ and we are delighted that the Government has listened to us”, Vice President Kerry Moir said today.

“The subsidy has not been growing to any extent in the past few years and it needs to if councils are to adequately take on the responsibilities expected of them”, Vice President Kerry Moir said.

“Remote member councils rely heavily on the NT operational grant because of the limited revenue raising opportunities open to them”, said Vice President Moir. “This decision will ensure that, once the new methodology is in place councils will know that the pool of funds available to them is going to increase annually and that is good news”.
