COUNCILS GATHERING FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE AND GENERAL MEETING

Close to 100 delegates from 35 councils will meet in Darwin from 12 to 15 April 2005 to hear presentations from several notable speakers and also to discuss issues facing local government in the Northern Territory.
“Once again it is great to have such a wonderful attendance and is an endorsement of the work of the Association ” Vice President Ray Wooldridge said today.
“Speakers at the meeting will include, Local Government Minister John Ah Kit, Shadow Local Government Minister John Elferink and NT Police Commissioner Paul White”, said Vice President Wooldridge .
“A number of senior Government representatives are also taking the opportunity to get their message out to members”, said Vice President Wooldridge. “They include recent changes in Indigenous Affairs by the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination, Indigenous housing, proposed Volatile Substance Abuse prevention Act, asbestos issues on remote communities and a presentation on consumer protection for indigenous communities by Derek Farrell from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission”.
“The Association also has a number of important business items to discuss, including the adoption of the Association’s Business and Strategic Plans”, Vice President Wooldridge stated. Ends
