Extra funding welcomed

Extra funding welcomed – but not before time!
Media Release:05/10/2004

Local Government Association President Mayor Fran Kilgariff today welcomed the announcement by Local Government Minister, John Ah Kit for an additional amount of $450,000 to remove funding shortfalls to councils.

“This funding is very welcome”, said Mayor Kilgariff “but considering that there has only been a 1.2% total increase over the last three years this announcement is not before time.”

“Forty of the fifty six community government and association councils received less in operational funding from the NT Government last year than they did in 1999/2000”, said Mayor Kilgariff.

Mayor Kilgariff said that an example of how funding cuts were affecting the smaller communities was the tiny Milyakburra Council in the Gulf of Carpentaria. “Milyakburra Council received $144,224 in 1999/2000, last year they received $84,345”, said Mayor Kilgariff.

Mayor Kilgariff said she looked forward to seeing the final list of funding to councils for 2004/05 when she would be able to comment further on the Minister’s announcement.
