PRESIDENT ON HAND TO LAUNCH TIWI ISLANDS LOCAL GOVERNMENT WEBSITE
Media Release:21/05/2003

The President of the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT), Alderman Cecil Black attended along with LGANT staff the official launch of the Tiwi Islands Local Government Website at Nguiu today.

Senator Richard Alston was on hand to launch the Website at a meeting with members and staff of the Council Alderman Black said. "Funds for the project come from the Commonwealth Government?s Networking the Nation programme" he said.

The President of Tiwi Islands Local Government, Maralampuwi Kurrapuwu, along with members and staff of the Council, welcomed delegates to the launch.

"It is the first of many such Websites we are developing in conjunction with Councils in the Northern Territory" Alderman Black said. "It is new technology for many Councillors and staff and there is no doubting the importance of it to Councils in remote areas" he said.

"We in LGANT are delighted to be involved in this project because it, along with other information technology projects we are implementing, is going to improve dramatically the information technology environment for many Councils" he said. "We will not only be assisting to develop systems with Councils, we will also be organising support for Councils to maintain them" he said.

Alderman Black said the Tiwi Website was the 'start of a whole new impetus' in local government administration. "There is no doubting its usefulness particularly in light of the Northern Territory Government's recent announcements to do regional governance" he said. "The timing of these projects could not be better for a host of reasons" he said.
