The Northern Territory's five municipalities are:

Some 78 percent of the Territory's population reside within municipalities. Municipal Councils in the NT provide a similar range of services for Councils throughout Australia with the exception being that they do not have responsibility for building control or planning. These functions remain the responsibility of the Northern Territory Government.

Services and facilities maintained by the Municipals include:

  • Youth services
  • Art and cultural facilities and activities
  • Libraries
  • Parking
  • Street lighting
  • Footways and cycle tracks
  • Recreational and sporting facilities
  • Control of public places
  • Animal management
  • Recycling facilities
  • Swimming pools
  • Roads and airports
  • Parks and gardens
  • Cemeteries
  • Waste and pest management
