Local Government Reform Raises Uncertainty
Media Release:12/02/2008
‘The Government’s announcements today on the resignation of the Minister for Local Government the Hon Elliott McAdam MLA and the halting of the creation of the Top End Shire were not expected and leave some uncertainty’ the President of the Local Government Association of Northern Territory, Kerry Moir, said.
‘The Minister was certainly sincere in his commitment to the concept of reform’ the President said.
'Up until now the government has been firm on its directions with local government reform. This is the first sign of any alteration to its plans’ the President said.
'I don’t believe the decision today on the Top End Shire is the end of it. There is a lot of unfinished business arising out of this decision, including that relating to unincorporated land and the status of the councils that were to form part of it. At some point in time these matters will have to be resolved’ the President said.
