Councils meet in Darwin for Local Government Conference and AGM

Over 100 delegates from 34 councils are meeting in Darwin at the Darwin City Council Civic Centre on the 22 and 23 November 2007 for what will be the last AGM for many councils as they will be amalgamated into the new local government structure on 1 July 2008.
The Association has a number of very interesting speakers on the first day including Local Government Minister Elliot McAdam, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma and Major General Dave Chalmers the Operational Commander of the Northern Territory Emergency Response Taskforce.
“The Association is very keen to hear the Ministers thoughts on how the Local Government Reform is progressing” LGANT President Alderman Kerry Moir said today.
“There are some members that are unhappy with the process and this will be discussed at Friday’s general meeting”, LGANT President, Alderman Moir said today.
“The Association also has a number of other important business items to discuss, including rate capping, proposed amendments to the LGANT constitution that allows for the new local government structure and also the review of the new Local Government Act”, President Moir stated. Ends
