Local government councils manage successful infrastructure programs

.
Media Release:24/10/2007

LGANT President, Alderman Kerry Moir reacted angrily today to the assertionby Cattlemen’s Association Stuart Kenny that Local Government could not be trusted to deliver key infrastructure investments in the Northern Territory.

“The Roads to Recovery (R2R) Program, a partnership between the Commonwealth Government and Councils across Australia has been recognised as a well-targeted, efficient and cost effective program”, said Alderman Moir. It has enhanced community road safety and remote accessability and at the same time boosted economic development and regional economies over the past seven years’. The R2R funding delivers $5million per annum to local road projects in the Northern Territory, and all of these projects are managed by local councils.

“I congratulate local councils in the Northern Territory for the significant road infrastructure projects that have been delivered in the NT under the Roads to Recovery program.

Some of the projects delivered to date are:

  • The sealing of boundary road by the Yirrkala Dhanbul Council has enhanced the access to amenity of the local community in accessing recreational areas, market gardens and local school.
  • At Yuelamu the council extended the life of its internal sealed road network by using R2R funds on a reseal program
  • The Alpurrurulam Council in partnership with the NT Government used its R2R funds to seal a section of the Sandover Highway that services the community and pastoral properties in the region.

I welcome yesterday’s announcement by the Shadow Roads Minister Martin Ferguson of a $52million commitment for remote roads in the NT but I hope that it is additional funds and not at the expense of existing programs such as the Roads to Recovery program that has serviced remote areas successfully over the last seven years .
