Councils meet in Alice for Local Government Conference and Annual General Meeting
Media Release:09/10/2006
Over 80 delegates from 33 councils are meeting in Alice Springs on the 11 and 12 October 2006 to hear from the Local Government Minister, Elliot McAdam on his plans for the future of Local Government Councils in the Northern Territory.
The Association will also elect a new Executive to lead councils through what promises to be a very challenging two years. There have been 25 delegates nominating for the eight positions on the Executive. This is clear evidence members value their Association and the leadership role it plays in the local government sphere.
“The Association is very appreciative that Minister McAdam has been able to absent himself from parliamentary sittings for the day to personally address our meeting” LGANT President Alderman Kerry Moir said today.
“We have been hearing rumours about the government’s plans for some time now and we are hoping that the Minister will be able to give the members some clear direction on the future of local government in the NT at the meeting”, said President Moir .
“The Association also has a number of other important business items to discuss, including the adoption of the Association’s Annual Report, a proposed Code of Conduct for Local Government, Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) status for members and how changes to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act may affect member councils”, President Moir stated.Ends
