Local Government supports Opal roll-out
Media Release:12/07/2006
Northern Territory Local Government Association President Alderman Kerry Moir said today that the Local Government Association fully supported the expanded roll-out of Opal fuel in Alice Springs and to roadhouses on the Stuart Highway. Alderman Moir was commenting on the recent announcement by Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott for an extra $5 million towards the roll-out.
“The Associations policy is that Opal fuel should be available across the entire Northern Territory”, said Alderman Moir. “The Association has written to the Federal Health Minister in July and December last year on this issue and we are glad that the Government is now moving in the right direction”, said Alderman Moir.
“I congratulate the Alice Springs Town Council for its recent decision to use Opal fuel in their vehicles and I encourage other Councils to take similar action where sniffing is a problem”, said Alderman Moir. “It is also up to the businesses and people of Alice Spring to support the roll-out by using Opal fuel in their vehicles”, Alderman Moir said.
"It is also appropriate that the Government initiate an education campaign so people, particularly tourists, are aware of the issues and encouraged to fill their vehicles with Opal", said Alderman Moir.
