Historic Local Road Alliance between Local Government Association of the Northern Territory and the Northern Territory Government
Media Release:11/07/2006

Northern Territory Local Government Association President Alderman Kerry Moir and Minister for Transport the Hon Dr Chris Burns MLA today welcomed the inaugural meeting and signing of the “Local Road Management Alliance” between the Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure and the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory representing local government.

“We need to work collaboratively to develop opportunities and plans to better use limited resources to meet the needs and expectations of our communities” said Alderman Moir. “One of the priorities local government will be working with the Northern Territory Government on through the Alliance is more accurate and nationally consistent data on local roads. We need to do this to ensure that we are in a position to put to the Australian Government our case for a more equitable share of the taxation pool for the Northern Territory road network “ Alderman Moir said.

Minister Burns said “The Alliance is evidence of the Northern Territory Government’s commitment in working with local government and industry to enhance the development and management of the road network in the Northern Territory.” Minister Burns went on to say, “An example of the financial commitments and tangible outcomes of such a whole of government approach is evidenced by the upgrade of the “Outback Way” linking the Northern Territory with Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and Winton in Queensland. This opens up huge expanses of central Australia, creating economic opportunities for remote communities along its route through the centre of our nation. The 2 ½ year, $20 million project is being jointly funded by the three spheres of Government involving two states and the Northern Territory.”

Both Alderman Moir and Minister Burns acknowledge the Alliance reflects the shared commitment to collaboration and partnering by both spheres of government in the Northern Territory to better strategically manage the Northern Territory road network.
