Local Government supports Senate report on petrol sniffing
Media Release:21/06/2006
Northern Territory Local Government Association President Alderman Kerry Moir said today that the Local Government Association fully supported the recommendations of Senate Committee report ‘Beyond Petrol Sniffing: renewing hope for Indigenous communities’ tabled in Parliament yesterday .
“The report calls for a commitment to longer term funding models for relevant programs on Indigenous communities and adequate resources are provided for trained, skilled and committed staff to be retained in communities on a permanent basis”, said Alderman Moir. “The Association wholeheartedly agrees with this and I recently called for more resources to provide staff housing on remote communities”, said Alderman Moir.
“The Local Government Association’s policy on the roll out of Opal fuel, that is a Territory-wide approach has also been supported by the Senate Committee, which is very pleasing”, Alderman Moir said.
“The roll out of Opal fuel is a critical component of any overall strategy to combat petrol sniffing”, Alderman Moir said. “I congratulate the Alice Springs Town Council for its recent decision to use Opal fuel in their vehicles and I encourage other Councils to take similar action where sniffing is a problem”.
