NT Local Government

Roles and responsibilities of the three levels of Government in the Northern Territory.

The Commonwealth Government

Makes laws for the whole of Australia and looks after the big things like

  • Telecommunication
  • Customs
  • Immigration
  • Defence
  • Tax

All of us must obey Commonwealth Laws as these are the strongest laws.

Northern Territory Government

Looks after and make laws about

  • Law and Order
  • Power
  • Water
  • Education
  • Health
  • Environment
  • Social Services

Northern Territory Local Government

The Councils provide services and maintain facilities in their areas for the people. If they do this properly, people should enjoy living in the area.

Local governments make laws only for its local government area. Local government areas cover most of Australia.

The Law that makes it possible for a Local Government to be formed is called the Northern Territory Local Government Act 1994.

Some of the services and facilities include things like

  • Rubbish collection
  • Housing
  • Essential services
  • Children services
  • Health
